What is lock snapping?

When enough force is applied to the end of the lock fitted in most UPVC, and also some composite, sliding patio, wood and even aluminium doors, the lock will snap in half. This type of lock is called a euro-cylinder and it is made of brass, so little or no maintenance is required. The trouble with brass is that it is a soft metal and within the structure of the lock, there is a weakened area. With the little force applied the lock will snap in two, exposing the locking mechanism and with a little knowledge this can be unlocked/opened and entry gained into your home. When gaining entry into your property by this method, most of the time the outside handle on your door is usually damaged as well.

How do you know which locks you have?

You don't to be honest. A good locksmith will be able to advise and tell you what type of locks are fitted, as the lock itself will properly have to be taken out and examined to be absolutely sure.

Even brand new properties are not guaranteed to have anti-snap locks fitted. There is no obligation by the builder to fit these types of lock and it's not an insurance requirement either.

Best possible Security

Fitting anti-snap locks means thieves are unable to break your locks. These are high security locks and offers a high standard of protection to you, your family and your home without making radical changes to you existing door. There is no need to even replace your door handle. The resistance to lock snapping has been achieved by increasing the strength of the lock by the metal used in manufacture and addressing the weak points of the euro-cylinder. These anti-snap locks are also fitted in a way that they are of drill resistance has well as pick resistance.

If you want total piece of mind that your door is safe and secure and to take out of the equation the damage which could be done to your door handle, you could have high security door handles fitted too. These are known as "Pas 24 handles" and when fitted they create a barrier around the lock and this prevents any access to the lock barrel. They are milled from a solid piece of aluminium which equates to it being much stronger due to it having more thickness to it, more substantial metal around the fixing screw points and the screws themselves are made of hardened steel.

They can not be fitted to all doors but fit a large proportion of doors out there and they look good as well.

The combination of an anti-snap lock and a Pas 24 handle set will give you the ultimate protection against any unlawful entry.
